About Flutie Spectrum Enterprises
The Flutie Foundation has expanded the focus of its mission from supporting children on the autism spectrum and their families to include empowering adults on the autism spectrum as well. As Doug Flutie, Jr. himself has entered adulthood, the Foundation recognizes the unique needs of adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Children aging out of the public school system need support transitioning into adulthood. An estimated 90% of adults with ASD are unable to obtain employment. With all of this in mind, the Flutie Foundation began a strategic partnership with Extraordinary Ventures (EV), a nonprofit in Chapel Hill, North Carolina that creates businesses to employ adults with autism. EV’s unique approach to solving the adult employment problem fits directly in line with the values of the Flutie Foundation: employing adults from all segments of the autism spectrum, integrating employees into the community, and fostering a spirit of innovation shaped around the skills and interests of employees.
Based on the EV model, the Flutie Foundation is launching Flutie Spectrum Enterprises, LLC (FSE). FSE is a social enterprise, utilizing business principles to fulfill its social mission of employing adults with autism. The first enterprise will be an “office solutions” business that offers direct mail, assembly, shredding, and other related services to businesses. Such tasks will make great use of employees’ unique attention to detail and appreciation of rhythmic structure, while improving their motor skills, stamina, and social skills. Customers will receive stellar service at competitive rates.
